A technology for recycling electric car batteries in Quebec

Most electric car battery recycling processes use heat to recover the metals, which is energy-intensive, inefficient and uneconomical, as well as polluting. But a group of Quebec companies has developed an innovative technology that could reduce the ecological footprint of these batteries. A report by journalist Alexandre Touchette

The technology proposed by the Recyclage Lithion consortium uses hydrometallurgy. Instead of melting the paste obtained by dissecting the batteries, it is dissolved in a liquid and the components are then separated. This process recovers 95% of the components in lithium-ion batteries, notably those used in electric cars.
